Energy Saving Laundry Tips
Energy Star washers are a great way to
conserve energy and save yourself some money in the laundry room. Here are even more ways to cut back.
You’re only helping Proctor & Gamble when you
pour in those heaping cups of laundry soap. The owners’ manual provides
instructions on the proper amount of soap to use. Using too much soap also can
shorten the life your clothing, which could get expensive.
DO keep venting dry and clear.
We recommend cleaning your dryer vent a few times a
year. Otherwise, it could get blocked
up, causing your dryer to take longer to do its job. And remember to clean your
lint filter after every use.
DO switch to cold-water washes
About 90 percent of the energy used for washing
clothes in an average washer is for heating the water. Need I say more? If you
have tough, oily stains, even switching your temperature setting from hot to
warm can cut a load’s energy use in half. Otherwise, you’d be surprised how
well cold water cycles clean these days.
DON’T over-dry your clothes
Instead, use a moisture sensor (if you have one) to
automatically stop the dryer once it’s finished. Note: Dry towels and heavier
cottons separate from lighter weight clothes to ensure proper drying when using
a sensor. If you don’t have a moisture sensor, use the cool-down cycle to
finish drying clothes using the residual heat.
DO put full loads in the washer and dryer.
Full loads of laundry mean fewer loads of laundry,
which mean less energy, water and money used, too. If you must wash a small
load, remember to set the water-level to match.

Induction Cooking
You may have been hearing about induction cooking lately,
but you may still be in the dark about what it actually is. Induction technology uses electromagnetic
energy to transfer heat directly to your cookware. Since the cookware heats more quickly than on
gas or electric cooktops, cook times are faster, meaning less energy is used. Plus, it allows you to instantly adjust the
heat from a delicate simmer to a quick boil.
Induction heat combines the benefits of gas and electric cooktops, offering
you the power of gas and the easy cleanup of electric.
Cooks who are new to induction cooking will realize the
benefits of induction immediately. It’s faster,
has more responsive heating, more energy-efficient cooking, and easier cleanup.
Here are some other features induction offers:
- Bring water to a boil in
as little as 90 seconds
- 70% more efficient than
gas and 20% more efficient than electric
- More responsive so you can instantly adjust the heat to a
delicate simmer or bring it to a quick boil
- The sensors automatically
detect the presence of magnetic cookware, activate the induction field,
and adjust it to the exact size of the pan
- Heat is transferred
directly to the cookware, so the cooktop stays cooler to the touch
Come to any of our stores to learn more and see the induction ranges
and cooktops for yourself!

Microwaving Tips
The microwave can be
a great tool for quick meal, but some methods of microwave cooking and
reheating can be harmful or downright dangerous. So here are some basic dos and
don’ts to help keep you safe:
DON’T put metal in a microwave…ever. You will cause sparking
and potential damage. This includes aluminum foil and those portable coffee
mugs.
DO microwave
by number. Avoid plastics No. 3, No. 6 and No. 7, as these could leach
chemicals into your foods. Plastic wrap and Styrofoam can also melt. Transfer
to a different container and use a glass lid to cover the food.
DON’T heat
acidic foods, like tomato sauce, in plastic containers.
DO choose
containers made of glass or ceramic or plastic that’s made for microwaving.
DON’T cook
large cuts of meat on full power. Instead, use medium power (50%) for longer
periods to ensure heat reaches the center without overcooking outer areas.
DO stir or
rotate food halfway to eliminate cold spots where harmful bacteria can survive.

Power Outage Tips
As we enter the stormy fall and winter, we’re bound to have
some power outages. So when the power
goes out and your refrigerator isn't cooling, what should you do?
First, call the power company and find out how long the
power will be out. If the power outage
is less than 24 hours:
Keep the doors shut on both the refrigerator and freezer
compartments to keep food cold or frozen. If you’re experiencing a refrigerator
power outage for more than 2 hours, you might want to pack dairy and meats into
coolers filled with ice, says the CDC.
If the power will be out for more than 24 hours:
Add 2 lbs of dry ice in the freezer for every cubic foot of
freezer space, which will keep the food frozen for two to four days. Otherwise,
you’re going to have to eat all that perishable food.
A full freezer stays cold longer than a partially filled one
and a freezer full of meat stays cold longer than a freezer full of baked
goods. A half-full freezer will keep food safe for 24 hours, and a full freezer
will keep food safe for 48 hours, according to the CDC.
If food contains ice crystals, you can refreeze it, although
the quality and flavor may be affected. Test meats to ensure the temperature hasn't risen to 40 degrees. Use your gut. If it looks like it’s in rough shape,
toss it.

Tips for the Perfect Refrigerator Temp
If you set your refrigerator temperature too low, your food
will freeze. Set it too high, however, and your food will spoil quicker due to
increased bacterial growth. It’s hard to
know what is too high and what is too low…
The recommended temperature for your refrigerator ranges
from 35 degrees to 38 degrees and it’s best to keep it stocked well with food,
because — believe it or not — a fully stocked fridge holds its temperature
better than one with a couple condiment bottles in the door.
The best test for your refrigerator’s temperature is a
beverage. If you don’t like the temperature of your beverage, adjust the
fridge. If you think your refrigerator is too cold, increase the temperature by
1 degree and allow 24 hours for the compartment to adjust. Obviously, do the
opposite if you think your refrigerator is too warm.
To ensure proper temperatures, air has to be able to flow
between the refrigerator and freezer sections.
Make sure the air vents aren’t blocked by anything. Otherwise, it might
block the flow of air to the refrigerator, which in turn causes temperature and
moisture problems.
If your refrigerator is too warm, pop off your kick-plate and clean it
out. If your refrigerator can’t exhaust
properly, it can’t cool properly. So, vacuum the condenser every three months!

Dishwasher not Drying Your Dishes?
If your dishwasher has a stainless steel tub, you probably
need rinse aid. Sure, your dishwasher could be the best, highest-efficiency
model. It still needs rinse aid. Rinse aid helps dry dishes by reducing water
droplet formation. (Note: If you have a plastic tub and your dishes aren’t
drying, you might need a service call on the heating element.)
If you’ve added rinse aid to your dishwasher and your dishes
still come out wet, check if you’re washing a lot of plastic dishes. Sometimes
these can exacerbate the problem. Have you ever noticed that plastic dishes
often come out with droplets of water while all your glass and porcelain dishes
are completely dry? That’s because plastic does not hold heat the same way
regular dishes do.
Why does that matter? It throws the dishwasher off its
drying mojo. Here’s how the dishwasher drying process works: The final rinse water reaches a very high
temperature which heats up your dishes. The stainless steel tub is a cooler
surface, so the moisture collects on the tub rather than your dishes.
Other things that throw the dishwasher off its drying mojo:
- Washing all the dishes before you load them. Scrape off large food pieces, but just say no to washing your dishes before you wash them! If the dishes are clean, your smart dishwasher cuts the wash time down. If this happens, the dishwasher may not have time to get hot enough. The water is heated to more than 40 degrees higher than the hot water being piped in.
- You’re using the light or quick wash cycles for everyday stuff. It won’t usually wash or dry as well.

Energy Saving Cooking Tips
Stoves, cooktops and ovens aren’t Energy Star rated because
most models use about the same amount of energy. But there are certainly ways
to use less gas or electricity when cooking.
1. Keep your burner caps and drip pans clean
Dirty surfaces don’t reflect heat as well as polished
surfaces, thus wasting energy and potentially your time.
2. Match pots and pans to the size of your burners
Unless you’re using an induction cooktop or range, you’re
heating a lot of air while you try to heat your food. Induction cooking is 20%
more efficient than electric and 70% more efficient than gas. To mitigate energy loss, choose the appropriate sized pot or
pan for the size of burner you’re cooking on.
3. Cover your pots while boiling water
When you think about it, it makes no sense to boil water in
an uncovered pot. Using a cover helps water boil faster while creating pressure
and preventing evaporation.
4. Skip preheating
Unless you’re baking and require precise temperatures, you
don’t need to wait till your oven reaches 350 degrees to throw your food
in. Better yet, shut off your oven a few
minutes early and let residual heat finish off your dish.
5. Use the microwave
Using the microwave as an alternative to the oven cuts
energy use in half. Plus, it’s faster!

Maximize Your Refrigerator
Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your refrigerator.
1. A small amount of condensation on the fridge or freezer
is normal, especially during humid weather and summer vacation, if you see more
condensation than normal, check the seal (or gasket) for any obstructions and
clear them. If there aren’t any, try moistening the gasket with Vaseline by
rubbing a thin layer on the seal where it meets the cabinet of the fridge. This
should create a stronger, air-tight seal.
2. Brands might create the perfect space for gallon-jug
storage on your refrigerator door, but consider how quickly you will use highly
perishable foods (like milk) before storing them here. Why? Consider the
temperature fluctuations of this region of the refrigerator. Accordingly,
produce like broccoli, asparagus and apples benefit from colder temperatures
located near the rear, while corn and berries — for example — benefit from the
warmest spot in the refrigerator, so choose those for the front.
(Alternatively, fresh herbs like basil thrive in slightly warmer-than-fridge
temperatures, so it's smart to keep them in the door)
3. Use your crisper. Those clear drawers in your fridge
aren’t just for convenience. Many models allow you adjust the humidity of your
crisper drawers to suit their contents. Consult your use & care manual for
specifics on your model, but in general, separate your fruits from vegetables
and set humidity to high for green, leafy vegetables and low for fruits and
vegetables with skins. Meats should be colder – often just above freezing – so
keep them in your deli drawer, which is usually designed to stay colder.

Grilling on the 4th?
The biggest grilling day in America is almost here! If you’re tired of the same old burgers and
hot dogs for the 4th of July, try this recipe for All-American Steak
Burgers courtesy of Weber.
You’ll need:
1/2 cup KRAFT THICK 'N SPICY Original Barbecue Sauce
1/4 cup A1 Original Steak Sauce
2 pounds ground sirloin
1 each green and red pepper, cut into 3/4-inch-wide strips
1 Vidalia onion, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
8 KRAFT Singles
8 whole wheat hamburger buns, toasted
Then it’s just four easy steps:
Prepare the grill for direct cooking over medium heat (350°
to 450°F).
Mix barbecue sauce and steak sauce. Mix 1/4 cup with meat;
shape into 8 (1/2-inch-thick) patties.
Grill patties and vegetables over direct medium heat, 10 to
12 minutes or until burgers are done (160ÂşF) and vegetables are crisp-tender,
turning and brushing with remaining sauce after 6 minutes.
Top burgers with Singles; grill 1 minute or until melted.
Fill buns with vegetables and cheeseburgers.

Time to Get Your Grill Out!
Now
that the sun has been out for more than a couple of days, in the Northwest that
means it’s time to start grilling! So
break out your gill and follow these tune-up tips to make sure your gas or
charcoal grill is ready to go.
Clean the interior using a putty knife to scrape off
burnt-on food particles inside your grill. This isn’t just aesthetic. Build-up
prevents your grill from heating correctly.
To clean your grates, Weber
Grill suggests
putting them in a dark-colored plastic bag with a cup of ammonia into the bag.
After a day in the sun, residue should easily hose off.
If you have a grease drain, make sure
it’s unclogged by running a coat hanger down it. Just keep your hands away from
the grease bucket, because the grease will drain out fast and could burn you.
Season the grill. Use nonstick cooking spray to oil the
grates, drip pans and inside of the grill. This helps keep food from sticking
to the surfaces and speeds cleaning. Light the grill and let it burn empty with
the lid closed for 30 minutes to burn off the preservatives.
Level the grill. If one side of your grill burns burgers
while the other leaves them raw, it’s probably not level. Check both
side-to-side and front-to-back to ensure even heating.
Check for leaks by inspecting connections for tightness
and hoses for cracks. Another good way to scope out leaks is by brushing
non-ammonia soapy water around the fitting with an old toothbrush. Turn the gas
on and watch for bubbles.
After
following these tips, your grill should be good to go, so get out there and
enjoy!

Smelly Microwave?
You know how sometimes you microwave food and it ends up smelling like something you made last week? As much as you clean it, often times you just can’t get rid of that stinky odor. Frigidaire passed along this easy odor-removing solution.
You’ll need:
• 1 cup water
• juice of 1 lemon
• grated lemon peel
• several whole cloves
Combine all ingredients together in a glass measuring cup and boil for several minutes in the microwave on full power. Allow the hot mixture to sit in the microwave until cool (this is when the magic happens). Wipe interior with a soft cloth. That's it!

Grilling Season is Here!
...well almost. It's officially Spring and as we wait for the weather to catch up, we should be getting ready to grill! If you’re looking for that perfect grill, here are some things to consider when deciding between a gas, electric, or charcoal grill.
Convenience: Generally the more convenient a grill becomes the less real smoky flavor you are going to get. An electric grill is easiest to use but doesn't have that real fire flavor, while hardwood fires give you the best flavor, they are the hardest work. If you want to be able to come home from work and throw a couple of steaks or chicken breasts on the grill with virtually no hassle then electric or gas might be what you are looking for.
Authenticity: The authentic smoky, off the fire taste of grilled foods is strongest with the original heat source, wood. As you move to electric you find very little of this flavor left. In fact, many electric grills add virtually nothing to the taste of foods. However the simplicity of flipping a switch and grilling can't be beat.
Taste: A study was done a while back where people were presented with hamburgers and steak cooked on gas and charcoal. No one could tell the difference between the charcoal or gas when it came to the hamburgers, but they could tell the difference with the steak. The charcoal grilled steak had more distinct smoke flavor.
Space: Consider where your grill is going to sit. A small patio or covered area is not the place for a large charcoal grill. Electric grills produce no flare-ups and are safer in smaller areas. Gas grills do produce flare-ups and need to be away from any structure to avoid house fires. Charcoal can be lit with an electric starter and therefore can be used with virtually no open flame.
Cost: Gas grills are generally more expensive than electric or charcoal, with charcoal being the cheapest. If you don't want to spend a lot of money then charcoal might be the answer. However, charcoal is the more expensive fuel. You can easily spend $5 a cookout on charcoal, while gas might cost around $.20 per cookout. Charcoal won't save you money in the long run.
If you still need help figuring out what kind of grill you want to go with, stop by any of our stores. We’d be happy to answer any of your questions and point you in the right direction.

How a Product Earns the ENERGY STAR Label
By now we know that Energy Star appliances save energy which in turn helps the environment and saves us money, but there are some details that we may not know about. I was visiting www.energystar.gov and found out that there is a whole list of requirements that an appliance has to meet before the EPA will give it the Energy Star label.
Here are some of those requirements:
- Product categories must contribute significant energy savings nationwide.
- Qualified products must deliver the features and performance demanded by consumers, in addition to increased energy efficiency.
- If the qualified product costs more than a conventional, less-efficient counterpart, purchasers will recover their investment in increased energy efficiency through utility bill savings, within a reasonable period of time.
- Product energy consumption and performance can be measured and verified with testing.
Right now there are huge savings and rebates on Energy Star appliances. Head to any one of our stores for details.

HOW TO: clean stove drip pans
If you have an electric coil stove you have drip pans, which — by name — catch drips. Even if you clean your range top often, it’s a mess the next time you cook.
So the clean-up should be quick and easy, or it won’t get done, right?
The method I’ve suggested before is cleaning stove drip pans with a paste. But no matter how wonderful, applying the paste and rinsing the pans is still more than some of us have time for on a nightly basis.
And this applies to gas stove tops too. Lots of drips land on the burner caps and below the grates.
The fastest, easiest — and perhaps even most effective way to clean the surface — Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, or a generic version of this melamine foam sponge. It looks like an ordinary sponge, but because it’s melamine, it actually has little micro scrubbers that can remove discoloration and baked on mess with minimal elbow grease.
That being said, it is abrasive in nature so it can scratch or dull surfaces if you’re not careful, in this case Bon-Ami is a great alternative.
